64. Gravity

As human beings we are all involved in a complex relationship with gravity - one that we adults take for granted. But as with everything else, children have to learn about gravity. They have to come to understand that things - including themselves - will fall and drop, and to understand friction and speed. And they have to master control of gravity, to learn when to use it to their advantage and when to respect its unrelenting force.

No surprise then, that children are always fascinated by games involving gravity. Marble runs, water slides, ball tracks - these games are the scientific exploration of a fundamental law of nature. What seems like wilful untidiness to us (throwing things downstairs, dropping food from the highchair) is really your child coming to terms with how the laws of gravity impact them.

Gravity games are always fun, since there is an element of magic to the way a solid item can move so quickly from one place to another, seemingly without help.
