75. Riding a Bicycle
Like running, cycling is great exercise for young children and most love to do it because it’s fast and fun and most importantly, gives them a sense of freedom.
Hand-eye-foot co-ordination, balance, and strength are all improved by regular cycling and the earlier you can get your children riding, the greater the benefits you’ll all get from it. Some children find it easier than others and there are many pre-cycling balance bikes that can help build the necessary confidence and technique. But as with most things, the secret of bike riding success lies in practice, and ensuring your young cyclist is well prepared, physically and mentally, before they try to cycle by themselves.
With the huge range of bike seats, trailers and tag-alongs now available, you don’t even need to wait until they are old enough to ride independently to do this. Early experience on the back of your bike will lay the foundations for a confident and secure attitude towards cycling. Include cycling in your daily routine as much as possible and you’ll not only encourage a healthy, active lifestyle but also self-confidence and independence.
