90. Balance

Without the balance and body awareness to control eye movements and co-ordinate hand-eye movements, reading and writing are very difficult. The information you take in becomes jumbled.

90. Balance

More important than you think! Good balance affects many unexpected areas of learning, so it’s worth focussing on before they get to school. Being ready to start reading and writing isn’t only about learning the alphabet and how to hold a pencil. Without the balance and body awareness to control eye movements and co-ordinate hand-eye movements, reading and writing are very difficult. The information you take in becomes jumbled.

You can improve balance by incorporating these types of movement into play:

  • spinning on the spot with arms outstretched
  • chasing games like tag
  • standing on an uneven or moving surface like a wobble board or trampoline
  • jumping up and down
  • swings

Balance tip: start building great balance early on with your baby by stimulating the vestibular (inner ear) system:

  • rock them in your arms
  • throw them up in the air (and catch them again!)
