Grasping, rolling and reaching for things that are just slightly out of their grasp, such as objects hanging from a play gym, will all help your baby’s developing strength and co-ordination. Tummy-time is vital, but not always enjoyable for some babies so be led by your instincts about how long to leave them on their front. Crawling is your baby’s first taste of independence. Babies who have begun to crawl are surveying their environment and beginning to understand their place within it. They’re also building strength, preparing their limbs for standing and eventually walking. As your baby gets ready for lift off you’ll find them sitting up, sitting back onto their bottoms and pushing up onto all fours. These fun first movements are all preparation for walking and eventually running. Smaller, more precise movements with arms and hands, like grasping a rattle, squashing a soft ball or cuddling a favourite soft toy, are all developing strength and co-ordination in hands and arms - skills that will eventually come in handy for mark-making and writing.
