Your child will have been making marks in some way since they were a baby, running their fingers through sand or through steam on the mirror. As toddlers they may use chalks on the patio or enjoy splodging paint on paper. By the time they reach pre-school they have greater control of their motor skills and begin to appreciate that not only they can control the marks they make, but they can also communicate feelings, thoughts and ideas. Mark-making gives children a powerful tool for thinking, reasoning and problem solving. Chunky crayons are a great way to get the smallest of hands scribbling. Streamers are a fun way to introduce the ups, downs and spiraling motions of hand-writing, and of course getting down to the beach and drawing pictures in the sand.
