DIY Paper Mache Recipe

Paper mache (papier-mâché) makes for a great craft, and homemade paper mache recipes couldn’t be easier.

What is paper mache?

Paper mache refers to using a mixture of glue and water or water and flour to adhere strips of paper to surfaces. You dip paper into the mixture, squeeze out the excess, attach it, and allow it to dry.

Easy paper mache recipe with flour and water

For an easy, homemade paper mache recipe, follow these simple steps:

  1. Put flour in a bowl.
  2. Mix in small amounts of hot tap water until the consistency appears thin like glue, not thick like batter

Cooked paper mache for a smooth finish

If you want a smooth, nearly clear finish, try this paper mache paste:

  1. Whisk two tablespoons of flour with a cup of cold water into a pot.
  2. Place the pot on the stove, and while stirring constantly, slowly bring it to a boil.
  3. As it thickens, use a silicone spatula to stir to prevent burning.
  4. As soon as it starts bubbling, remove it from the heat and allow the mixture to cool.

Don’t worry if it looks a bit runny while hot. The mixture will thicken when it cools.

Flour-free paper mache using PVA glue

You can create DIY paper mache with PVA glue, which is just school glue or white glue, by mixing glue and water in a 2-to-1 ratio. You can eye the amounts. Just shoot for the consistency of light cream.
